Was sind Topic Tables?

Topic Tables sind zeitlich begrenzte Arbeitsgruppen innerhalb der (Sub-)Community, die sich Herausforderung des Forschungsdatenmanagements (FDM) widmen. Sie bieten eine Plattform zur gemeinsamen Entwicklung von Lösungen oder Lösungskonzepten für (datenrelevante) Bedarfe innerhalb der Biodiversitätsforschung. Das Format ermöglicht es, über die Zusammenarbeit mehrerer Partner hinweg konkrete Outputs z.B. Workflows, Grundsatzpapiere, Roadmaps, Whitepapers, Datenprodukte, Leitlinien oder konkrete Folgeanträge zu erstellen. 

Im Renewal Proposal vom NFDI4Biodiversity Konsortium wurden Topic Tables als Instrument für die Community angelegt. Dabei bieten die Topic Tables die Möglichkeit in einem zeitlich begrenzen Rahmen an konkreten Ideen und Problem zu arbeiten. 

Der Fokus liegt dabei auf einem spezifischen Thema (Topic) welches im gemeinsamen Austausch oder Workshops bearbeitet werden kann und dann mit Hilfe entsprechender Outputs für die ganze Community bereitzustellen und entsprechend skalierbar zu machen. Aufgrund dieses Setups werden die Topic Tables im  Konsortium in Task Area 1-  Community enabling and support (2enable) angegliedert. 

Topic Tables are temporary working groups within the community or a sub-community that are dedicated to data-related research data management (RDM) challenges. They offer a platform for the joint development of solutions or solution concepts for (data-relevant) needs within biodiversity research. The format makes it possible to create concrete outputs, e.g. workflows, policy papers, roadmaps, white papers, data products, guidelines or concrete follow-up applications, through the cooperation of several partners. 

In the NFDI4Biodiversity consortium's renewal proposal, topic tables were created as a tool for the community. The topic tables offer the opportunity to work on specific ideas and problems flexibly and within a time-limited framework. 

The focus is on a specific topic, which can be worked on in joint discussions or workshops and then made available to the entire community with the help of corresponding outputs and made scalable accordingly. Based on this set-up, the Topic Tables in the consortium are assigned to Task Area 1- Community enabling and support (2enable).

  2. Applicants not affiliated with an NFDI4Biodiversity consortium member organization can apply if they cooperate with a member organization.

Wer kann Vorschläge einreichen? 

Grundsätzlich sind alle Akteur:innen der Biodiversitätscommunity dazu eingeladen, Topic-Table-Themen einzureichen. Folgende Vorraussetzungen müssen erfüllt sein:

  • Es müssen mindestens zwei Institutionen an dem Thema zusammenarbeiten
  • Mindestens eine Institution muss Partner in NFDI4Biodiversity sein, um die Weiterleitung der Mittel (gemäß Kooperations- und Mittelweiterleitungsvertrag) zu ermöglichen (diese Institution sollte als Antragsteller fungieren) 
  • Für jeden Topic Table muss eine Kontaktperson für die Kommunikation mit dem Konsortium benannt werden (diese kann von der antragsstellenden Person abweichen)  

Geht es später an die Einberufung der Arbeitsgruppe, fungiert die NFDI4Biodiversity-Partnereinrichtung als einladende Institution.

In principle, anyone can apply for a topic table. The following criteria must be met:

  • At least 2 institutions must be involved
  • At least one institution must be a partner in NFDI4Biodiversity to enable the transfer of funds (in accordance with the DFG funding transfer agreement) (this institution should also submit the application)
  • A contact person for communication with the consortium must be named for each topic table (this person may be different from the person submitting the proposal)  

During the term of the Topic Tables, the respective partner institution acts as the inviting institution for events. 


Förderfähige Aktivitäten für Topic Table

Anträge können sich auf folgende Bereiche beziehen:

  • Workshops und Vernetzungsveranstaltungen
  • Konzeptentwicklung von Datenprodukten und -infrastrukturen (z.B. Roadmaps, Workflows etc.)
  • Publikationen und Dokumentationen (Leitlinien, Grundsatzpapiere, Whitepapers, ...) 
  • Stakeholder-Engagement und Community-Integration
  • Erstellung von Folgeanträgen


Applications can relate to the following areas:

  • Workshops, round tables and networking events
  • Concept development of data products and infrastructure s(e.g. roadmaps, workflows, etc.)
  • Publications and documentation (guidelines, policy papers, white papers, ...) 
  • Stakeholder engagement and community integration
  • Preparation of follow-up applications

Wie kann ich mich beteiligen? 

 Es gibt verschiedene Möglichkeiten sich an Topic Tables zu beteiligen:

  1. Einen eigenen Topic Table einreichen
    1. Identifikation einen Problems oder Themas in der Biodiversitätscommunity, das angegangen werden muss
    2. Partner suchen
    3. Antragsformular ausfüllen  (Beispiel als Ausfüllhilfe siehe unten) [Anker]
  2. Teilnahme an kommenden Umfragen (TBA- LINK- Beschreibung bei "Wie läuft die Umfrage ab?")  wo bereits bestehende Ideen konsolidiert und interessensbekundungen eingesammelt werden

  3. Des Weiteren können Interessenten an laufenden Topic Tables, nach Rücksprache mit der Topic Table Kontaktperson, teilnehmen. 



 There are various ways to participate in topic tables:

  1. Create your own topic table
    1. Identify a problem or issue in the biodiversity community that needs to be addressed
    2. Look for independent partners
    3. Fill out an application form (see below for an example) [Anchor]
  2. Participation in upcoming surveys (TBA LINK description under “How does the survey work?”) where existing ideas are consolidated and expressions of interest are collected

  3. After the start of the Topic Tables, interest can still be expressed and, after consultation with the Topic Table contact person, participation is still possible ts. 


Bewerbung und Fristen

Zur Unterstützung der Topic Tables werden Sachmittel bereitgestellt, etwa für Reisen zu Präsenztreffen, Tagungen, Workshops oder Publikationen. Personalmittel zu beantragen, ist nicht möglich.


Einreichungsfrist: XX.05.2025 

Laufzeit: Die Standardlaufzeit beträgt ein Kalenderjahr, beginnend am 1. Januar. Eine Verlängerung des Topic Tables ist durch einen erneuten Antrag möglich.

Als Orientierung für die Budgetbeantragung kann für einen Topic Table, inklusive Workshop und Publikation in einem Open Access Journal, mit ca. 5.000 - 10.000,- € gerechnet werden. 

Als Option steht es Topic Tables offen, für die Umsetzung ihrer Konzepte mit bestehenden Partnern sich inner- oder außerhalb des Konsortium für weitere Finanzierung zu bewerben. 

Applications can be submitted until XX.05.2025. There will be annual calls for Topic Tables - at the same time as the calls for the Flexfunds project. Only material funds in the form of travel expenses, workshop costs or publication costs can be requested for Topic Tables. It is not possible to apply for personnel funds  The standard duration of Topic Tables is one calendar year. The duration can be extended by submitting a new application

As a guideline for the budget application, approx. 5,000 - 10,000,- € can be expected for a Topic Table including  one workshop and one publication in an open access journal. As an option, Topic Tables can apply for support for the implementation of their concepts with existing partners in the Topic Table, the consortium and/or external partners via the general Flexfunds mechanism. The selection is made by an independent review board in consultation with the steering group. The funded Topic Tables will be integrated into the NFDI4Biodiversity work program.
